Nautical Stripes

Nordstrom Sweater, Thrifted Dress and Belt, Zara Sandals, Ray-Ban Sunglasses, Michael Kors Watch, JCrew Bracelet

When I stumbled upon this black and white, multi-directionally striped dress during a recent thrifting excursion in Brooklyn, I knew it would not only help to fulfill my love of all things nautical (I’ve been looking for a striped dress for a while now), but it would also make for a versatile summertime piece — especially for dinners by the water. Its light material and billowy bottom gives it a very relaxed vibe, and it was just the right thing to pack for my trip to Maine. It was sheer enough to wear for a warm daytime stroll, and then could just as easily be transitioned to evening-appropriate by throwing a pastel sweater over top.

Bar Harbor

{Downtown Bar Harbor during a foggy morning stroll}

I spent Memorial Day weekend exploring the rocky coast of Maine with my boyfriend, twin sister, and her boyfriend for some much needed rest and relaxation. We drove up Thursday night in the wee hours of the morning and spent the past few days discovering the intricacies of the little town of Bar Harbor. We stayed at The Harborside Hotel and its prime location from almost every restaurant and tourist attraction, easily accessible tennis courts, and inviting pool house made it the perfect spot to relax. Despite the somewhat fickle New England weather, I can’t recall ever being on a more active and well-balanced vacation — from the many rounds of singles and doubles tennis matches, lazy afternoons by the pool, and hiking at Acadia National Park, this trip couldn’t have been a better way to kick off the summer. Here’s a quick glimpse at how we spent our days in Maine.

Mom’s the Word

{My mom with all of the girls in the family – I’m in the orange bonnet get-up}

This Sunday is Mother’s Day and I’m planning on spending the majority of the weekend at my parents to celebrate. My mom’s never been the type to ask for anything materialistic for the holiday – she prefers having my sisters, brother, and I visit (with empty stomachs for her to feed of course) so this weekend, we’re all getting together to just simply hang out.

As I’m getting older, I’ve come to learn how truly awesome and remarkable my mom is. She’s accomplished so much — moving her family from a war-stricken country, giving birth to my sisters and I in a refugee camp (with no modern medicine to even assist her!), and then raising five kids in a completely foreign country — without ever despairing and in perfectly put-together outfits no less (see photo of her ladylike polka-dots). Despite any obstacle that has been thrown her way, she’s somehow always been able to be strong, optimistic, and resilient, and I couldn’t be more grateful and proud to have such an amazing woman to model myself after.

I hope you all have a lovely Mother’s Day weekend. xo Siv

Warm Whites

H&M Dress, Weathervane Jean Jacket (from Seventh grade!), Ralph Lauren Wedges, Stella McCartney sunglasses, JCrew Bracelet, Michael Kors Watch

I’ve always had an aversion to dressing in head-to-toe white since I’m guilty of practicing pretty unrefined eating habits (I spill something on myself about once a day), but lately I’ve been favoring lots of crisp bright whites for Spring. I picked up this dress from H&M several weeks ago and its very affordable price tag and non-fussy polyester material makes it just the right thing to throw on for dinner on a warm night – even if dinner calls for slurping a messy yet ridiculously good bowl of ramen at Ippudo NY. I ordered the ‘Karaka Men’ and despite the noodle’s spicy red broth and trekking back to Brooklyn via the subway, I somehow miraculously managed to make it back stain-free.

Knots + Dots

Nordstrom Shirt, H&M Skirt, Zara Flats, Ray-Ban Sunglasses, Fendi Bag

I’ve never seen a Van Gogh in person, so this past weekend, we decided on a whim to head into the city and check out his 40 piece exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. After braving the painful traffic (both the Flyers and the Phillies were hosting at home), our plans fell through when we disappointingly learned that tickets were completely sold out for the day. My boyfriend couldn’t have been happier about our misfortune, and although my polka-dotted ensemble was a bit too fancy for the local sports bar, we spent the remainder of the day cheering on the Flyers over a few beers and plenty of cheesy shrimp sticks.

We ventured down to Baltimore for a quick trip to meet up with my sister and her boyfriend this past weekend. Since the weather called for only clear skies and sunshine on Saturday, I pulled out my brightest top to celebrate. Nothing beats enjoying both award-winning seafood (crab cakes at Faidley’s and oysters at Thames Street Oyster House) and good company in a comfortable cotton T-shirt and a light, airy skirt.

Gifted Reading

A few weeks back, I received National Geographic’s January 2012 edition courtesy of my boyfriend’s grandfather. This edition featured articles about two things that I hold very near and dear to me: 1. “A Thing or Two about Twins” (an article that discusses the ongoing debate of Nature vs. Nurture in identical twins) and 2. “The Healing Fields” (a touching story about one man’s mission to remove Cambodia’s thousands of land mines that were planted during the Khmer Rouge era). These two things have played such a huge role in helping to shape the person that I am today, and although this magazine was sent as a simple sweet gesture, it has turned out to be one of the most thoughtful gifts I’ve ever received.

A Short Hiatus

If you’ve been following this blog, I’m sure you’ve noticed that I’ve been absent for a bit in the past month. Life sometimes has a way of being a little crazy and hectic like that. But with Spring just around the corner, I’ve been feeling rejuvenated so I will retreat from hibernation and start posting again on a more regular basis! I’m especially looking forward to springing the clocks forward this upcoming Saturday because that only means one thing: more sunshine and pretty sunsets ready for me to enjoy right after work!

What are you excited for this Spring?

Love Letters

For Valentine’s Day this year, I decided to forgo buying pre-messaged cards and made my own to send out to my family and friends. It turned out to be such a fun activity and brought me back to my childhood days of playing with glue sticks, cutting out folded hearts, and leaving trails of glitter everywhere that I’m even considering making my own birthday or “just because” cards from now on. And although my final creations aren’t cookie-cutter perfect, I think personalized notes are the best ones to receive, especially on days like Valentine’s Day.

Current Love

While hanging out with my nephew the other night, I couldn’t help but notice the little ensemble that he was sporting. I can’t say I’m a big fan of the Snuggie, but when footed pajamas are donned by cute little toddlers (especially in such a fun monster print), it makes me reconsider the idea of an adult version for myself (to be worn on those cold winter nights while curled up on the couch with a good book).
